Biological or Clinical Significance:

Galectin-3 is a structurally unique member of a family of beta-galactosidase-binding lectins.  Expression of galectin-3 has been associated with the epithelium and inflammatory cells including macrophages, neutrophils and mast cells.  Galectin-3 has been implicated in a variety of biological processes important in heart failure, including myofibroblast proliferation, fibrogenensis, tissue repair, cardiac remodeling and inflammation.

Principle of Test Method:

The galectin-3 assay and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) designed to quantitatively measure galectin-3 in serum or plasma.
